I get the feeling the team is passionate about this project and are aware what they're making isn't for mainstream appeal, but something they both wanted to make and believed there was a cult audience that might like the game (which I guess they were right as they succeeded Kickstarter quite a bit, even when at the time all they had was the demo you posted a video from as people's impression of what the game would be like). I will highly bet that the game is and never was intended to be a game for everyone, but they are aiming for a specific audience with it and it'll probably grow a cult following in the future.

They have commented multiple times and people who have played larger chunks of the game mention Agony is actually quite a brutal game in terms of difficulty and can be rather scary because you're in an ecosystem that's both extremely unfriendly and full of surprises, and the objective of each area is a bit weird as it's essentially figuring out how to possess greater being, maneuvering hell with their abilities, and trying to get to the deeper rings of Hell to find the Red Goddess. But both share some qualities, and I'm fully suspecting from what I know, have played, and the like for this to be more in-line with something of Ice Pick's advant-garde game design (they also made Pathologic, Knock-Knock, and some other games).Īgony does have gameplay and increasing options and mechanics, but I think the game is less going for pure fun and more for something challenging and stylized. Now gameplay wise the games are different, the Void is more of a puzzle game where you use colors to represent different things and work out lies and truth from weird beings. However, it is very original and does some unique things. For one, it's actually brutally difficult and super long, and the game never explains anything to you, and you can play for like 10 hours and then figure out you've messed up and have to start all over.
So The Void is a cult classic, but it's definitely not a game for everyone. The game it reminds me of, though quite different, is The Void by Ice Pick Lodge: Click to shrink.I don't quite agree, I just think it's more they're going for something avant-garde.
